The V-12 marked the final chapter in the storied history of Pierce-Arrow, and what a chapter it was! Karl Wise, the company’s new Chief Engineer, headed development, and testing commenced in 1931 with famed driver Ab Jenkins piloting an experimental Pierce V-12 across the Bonneville Salt Flats. After covering over 2,000 miles within 24 hours, Jenkins reached 125 mph, managed an impressive 112 mph average and set 14 official international records in the process.

The engine’s design proved highly sound, and despite the worsening Great Depression, the Twelve debuted in November 1931. Carefully developed to its ultimate 1936 – 1938 form, the Pierce Twelve developed 185 bhp from its massive 462-cubic inch displacement and carried a wide variety of luxurious factory and custom-built bodies. The final body designs were attractively streamlined, refined and slightly wider than before, supported by a sturdier frame with a supplemental frame member and lengthened leaf springs, resulting in improved ride quality.

The Pierce-Arrow Twelve 5-Passenger Sedan offered here is a highly original, matching-numbers car that was formerly part of the famed Harrah Automobile Collection as confirmed by paperwork in the car’s file. It was reportedly acquired by Mr. Harrah in 1959 and remained within his famed collection for the next 24 years. A prewar-car collector then acquired the Pierce and, after 19 years, sold it to the next owner in 2002. Prior to its sale to the current owner in mid-2004, the Pierce was professionally restored, with an exterior refinish and new upholstery in the original maroon and tan and completely restored brightwork. A very desirable Pierce-Arrow, this V-12 Sedan also features a two-speed rear axle that will enhance drivability on one of the many exciting tours or events for which the next owner would be eligible.
