A very well-documented example with less than 32,200 miles from new

220 bhp, 400 cu. in. OHV V-8 engine, four-speed manual transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel power hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 108.0 in.

Although the American performance car was virtually extinct by 1975, Pontiac’s Trans Am actually enjoyed growing popularity, thanks to powerful engines, outstanding handling, and bold styling. Strong street performance and innumerable racing victories solidified the growing legend, which reached a fever pitch in 1977 with the Trans Am’s starring role in Smokey and the Bandit.

To commemorate the continuing success of the Trans Am on its 10th anniversary, Pontiac released the Y89 “Silver Special Edition,” with production limited to 7,500 examples. Exteriors were finished in metallic silver with dark charcoal and pinstripe accents, enhanced by mirror-tinted T-roof panels and an enlarged, five-color “Firebird” hood emblem. These cars received virtually every factory option, and the interiors featured distinctive, silver leather upholstery, matching deep-pile carpeting, and beautifully embroidered tri-color “Firebird” emblems.

Just 1,817 examples were fitted with the Pontiac 400-cubic inch V-8, rated at 220 horsepower and mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, while the remaining 5,683 cars received a 185 horsepower, 403-cubic inch Oldsmobile V-8 with a three-speed automatic transmission. As expected, handling and braking characteristics were outstanding, thanks to the standard WS6 performance suspension, which included eight-inch wide turbine-style alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, and upgraded suspension components.

This outstanding example from the Staluppi Collection shows less than 32,200 miles from new on the odometer, which is authenticated through a multitude of documents that accompany the car in its sale. It was previously a three-owners-from-new California car that retains its authentic, original interior and benefits from a high quality repaint in the correct silver color. This example is fitted with the more rare and desirable four-speed manual transmission and is complete with the original invoice, order sheet, and owner’s manual in its pouch, as well as delivery information to the original dealer, Bob Strong Pontiac Oldsmobile GMC of Kearney, Nebraska.

With recently growing interest in the second-generation Trans Am, this beautifully preserved, low mileage, and well-documented example is immensely collectible, yet it offers excellent ownership potential as a regular driver with tremendous power and even greater owner satisfaction.
