350 bhp, 396 cu. in. OHV V-8 engine, three-speed automatic transmission, coil spring independent front suspension, live rear axle with trailing arm coil spring suspension, and disc-front, drum-rear power hydraulic brakes. Wheelbase: 112.0 in.

Introduced in 1966, the Chevelle SS396 package was Chevrolet’s entry into the muscle car brigade. A cousin to Pontiac’s GTO and the Oldsmobile 4-4-2, it was their equal in performance and specification, even if it did not have quite the image, perhaps because the SS nomenclature had been used for so long on so many different Chevrolets.

For 1970, the 396 engine was bored out to 402 cubic inches. However, in Chevelle models, it was still advertised as a 396, so the SS396 nomenclature was unchanged. It was listed as a Regular Production Option Z25, which comprised a 350 brake horsepower Turbo Jet 396, power front disc brakes, dual exhausts, a black grille, wheel opening moldings, a “power dome” hood, special suspension, 14x7 sport wheels with G70-14 white letter tires, and SS emblems on the front and rear. A Turbo Hydra-Matic and four-speed manual were the only transmission options. RPO Z25 retailed for $445.55.

This 1970 SS396 Sport Coupe has a very appealing color scheme: a Cortez Silver body with Tuxedo Black SS stripes, harmonizing nicely with a black vinyl roof. The contours, paint, and chrome are all excellent. The interior is done in black vinyl and is in superb condition. Both the engine compartment and undercarriage are clean and correctly detailed. It is clear that the car has had a body-off restoration. The tires are Firestone wide ovals mounted on Chevy Sport wheels.

Other equipment includes a Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, power steering and power disc brakes, air conditioning, windshield washers, and an AM radio. Of particular note are the bucket seats, cowl induction hood, SS wheels, bumper guards, tilt wheel, console, seat belts, black vinyl roof, and power windows, and an owner’s manual is included in the sale.

A very smart example of the SS396 Sport Coupe, this car is tidy from top to bottom. It is attractive, powerful, and exciting. Its new owner will be proud to own such a vehicle.
