For any car enthusiast, the allure of owning a “brand-new old car” that boast modern build quality, performance, and amenities with the looks of a car from yesteryear is hard to overcome. That is exactly what the folks at Hot Rod magazine did when they created “Hot Rod 1” in 2004 and 2005.

The team at Hot Rod was inspired by the availability of all-steel 1969 Camaro bodies that were produced by Dynacorn Classic Bodies and decided to build the ultimate Camaro resto-mod. At the car’s heart lies a GM 454-cubic inch ZL1 crate motor that was used by GM to develop the limited-production crate engine that was rated at 510 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque. Its drivability was further enhanced with a modern suspension, BFGoodrich tires, and SSBC disc brakes, to rein all that power in when necessary. A Wizard billet radiator with four cooling fans further ensures the engine stays cool.

Several modifications were made to the car’s bodywork, including the addition of rear quarter panel scoops to give the brakes better cooling and custom front and rear spoilers with a custom hood to further enhance the car’s appearance. Inside, black and white ’57 Chevy-style “cobblestone” fabric seat inserts with white leather give the car a classic flair. Finally, the custom stereo, which features a Blaupunkt head unit with a trunk-mounted CD changer, Monster 6x9 speakers, and Bazooka subwoofers, creates a sound rivaled only by the exhaust note.

The completed product was featured on the cover of the December 2005 issue of Hot Rod magazine, with 50 pages dedicated to outlining the entire build process and documenting the car’s shake down on the 2005 Hot Rod Power Tour following its premier at SEMA in 2004. From nose to tail, nearly every component on Hot Rod 1 was built for specific use on this vehicle, and it shows impeccably.

A surefire show stunner, the presence of power steering and brakes, a modern cooling system, and numerous modern amenities make Hot Rod 1 as exciting to drive as it is to look at. This Camaro is a surefire stunner that exhibits wonderful workmanship from top to bottom, and it is unlike any other.
