Porsche’s popular 356 B Roadster replaced the one-year-only 1959 Convertible D, which, in turn, had succeeded the iconic Speedster of the mid-to-late 1950s. Introduced for the 1960 model year, the Roadster was a truly versatile open-air sports car; it is capable of being an enjoyable daily driver with wind-up windows and a comfortable interior, and it also able to enter weekend amateur track competition by simply removing the bolt-on curved-glass windshield and hubcaps and installing a roll bar.

The 356 B, in coupe, cabriolet, and roadster form, offered superior mechanicals to its predecessors; internal engine upgrades included stronger connecting rods and a more efficient oil pump. It also featured an improved gearbox, shifting linkage, and brakes; while, externally, the revised T5 body saw the front fenders and headlamps raised, and the hood was flattened. Redesigned bumpers were mounted higher on the body, and bumper guards were added for better parking protection. The rear bumper guards featured twin exhaust outlets. About thirty-one thousand 356 Bs were manufactured between 1960 and 1963.

This Roadster is described as a two-owner automobile that left the factory on August 8, 1960, and it was originally sold in the U.S. This Roadster was fitted with the 75-horsepower 1600 Super engine, and according to its Certificate of Authenticity, it was loaded with a long list of factory options, including chrome steel wheels, a Becker “Europa” AM-FM radio with antenna and dual speakers, a luggage rack, an outside mirror, reclining seats with headrests, seat belts, a dimmable rearview mirror, an anti-theft device (locking gearshift lever), Dunlop tires, and even cocoa-type floor mats.

It is described as exceptionally straight and solid, with good panel gaps all around. It has been fully restored and retains its original floors, longitudinal panels, and battery box, having enjoyed indoor storage its entire life. Originally delivered in 6002 Ruby Red with a black leatherette interior and black convertible top, the car has been refinished in an attractive metallic silver, and it presents cosmetically as a high quality driver. The interior now features full leather upholstery in excellent condition, along with correct square weave carpets and correct black rubber floor mats. The canvas top was recently replaced and presents as new. The instrument panel is in good condition and has an all original switchgear and instrumentation. Both the front trunk and engine bay are clean and well-detailed. Included with the car are a factory-issued Certificate of Authenticity, the owner’s manual, a matching spare wheel with tire, a jack, and one set of extra keys.

The drivetrain is said to be in good condition, with the original numbers-matching 1600 Super engine upgraded with a higher-performance ignition system. The Type 741 four-speed transmission shifts smoothly, offering a more satisfying driving experience than those of earlier models. It has enjoyed recent brake system work and stops straight and effectively.

The owner states that this very attractive 356 B Roadster drives exceptionally well, and it will be ideal for perspective new owners looking forward to club tours and rallies. This example, having been regularly maintained by a 356 expert, presents an excellent opportunity for the next enthusiast to enjoy on the open road.
