150 bhp, 2,912 cc OHV inline six-cylinder engine, dual SU carburetors, four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, independent front suspension with wishbones and coil springs, rigid rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and hydraulic front disc and rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 92 in.

Introduced in 1963 and built through 1967, the 3000 MK III (BJ8) was the final version of the beloved “Big Healey.” With its twin two-inch SU carburetors, the well-developed 2,912-cubic centimeter six-cylinder engine provided acceleration from 0–60 mph in 9.8 seconds, en route to a top speed exceeding 120 mph. Other improvements to the design included a revised exhaust system and a standard vacuum brake booster. In addition, passengers were treated to a more luxurious cockpit, with a handsome wood-faced dashboard and a floor console, as well as the roll-up side windows introduced on the prior BJ7.

Comfortable and fast yet classically styled, the 3000 MK III marked the epitome of the open British sports car. The example offered here, freshly restored by marque specialists Tom and Randee Rocke of Healey Lane in Riverside, California, is simply exceptional. The car’s Healey Gold finish, applied with a two-stage DuPont Chroma base in two separate applications, features extreme depth and luster. New Fawn Beige Amblia upholstery, direct from Mathews and Son, of London, England, with matching English wool carpeting, completes this car’s unique and striking color combination.

Mechanically, the engine, gearbox, and overdrive have all been completely rebuilt to original factory specifications. New components include the fuel tank and lines; brakes, lines, and cables; a cloth wiring harness; electrical components; the front suspension and springs; rear leaf springs; and a steel exhaust system. New door mechanisms and handles, a wood steering wheel, rebuilt original instruments, the walnut dashboard, chrome wire wheels, 185x70R15 road speed tires, a new convertible top with storage bag, a new windshield and side windows, and even new weatherstripping complete this highly detailed and most comprehensive restoration.

Expertly restored and accompanied at the auction by photographic documentation of the work performed, as well as by a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate verifying its origins, the offering of this excellent Austin-Healey 3000 MK III marks a tremendous opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts of these British sporting icons.

As with all of the Rockes’ restorations, this Austin-Healey is offered with a full one-year driveline warranty. See an RM specialist for further details.
