Porsche is synonymous with performance. Few other marques can rival their racing heritage. The evolution of a single model, the 911, has produced some of the most awe-inspiring automobiles for road and track. Every once in a while they release a supercar, a car engineered with the company’s competition pedigree as its backbone but perfectly legal for street use.

The Carrera GT traces its roots back to the 911 GT1, which was developed for the FIA GT Championship series. In 1999 Porsche began development on a new Le Mans prototype vehicle to replace the GT1. However, with the new FIA rules, Porsche decided to produce a limited number of road-going supercars instead. From 2004 to 2006, 1,270 GTs were built at the new Porsche facility in Leipzig, Germany. Of those, only 604 were destined for the U.S.

The Carrera GT has a large 5.7-liter V-10 engine producing 605 hp. It can be propelled to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and passes 100 mph in under 7 seconds. With a top speed of 205 mph, there are few other cars on the road that can compare. Mated to the race-bred engine is a traditional six-speed manual transmission. At the driver’s end is a simple yet elegant beech-wood gearshift knob that pays homage to the Porsche 917 Le Mans racers of years past.

Technology abounds beneath the Carrera’s skin. Its carbon-fiber monocoque, finished in GT Silver, and sub-frame were produced and assembled by the ATR Composites Group in Italy. Both the clutch and brake components employ ceramic composites, making them significantly stronger and lighter than conventional systems. Even the Porsche’s massive 19- and 20-inch wheels are made from ultra-light forged magnesium. The featherweight Carrera GT barely tips the scales at 3,050 lbs. Similar to other Porsche models, the GT includes an automated rear wing that deploys above 70 mph.

The interior of the Carrera GT is an elegant mix of pure racing car and Porsche luxury. Carbon fiber and brushed aluminum are plentiful, reminding the driver what this car is capable of, while supple black leather seats, steering wheel and interior accents make it comfortable enough for “everyday” driving. Other luxury amenities include one-touch automatic windows as well as electronically adjustable heated mirrors. Other road-going features are the front and side-impact airbags as well as anti-lock brakes.

Offered here is a rare opportunity to own one of the most technologically advanced Porsches to date. Showing less than 930 kms, this Carrera GT is in superb condition, and its cosmetic state is virtually brand new and devoid of any imperfections. Finished in silver with a black leather interior, this is the quintessential Porsche supercar, beautifully balanced and breathtakingly fast.
