With styling similar to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SL—its famous rounded body lines, low nose, and wide grille—the 190 SL was a more comfortable and less expensive alternative to its bigger sibling. The 190 SL offered a Type M121 BII 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine producing 120 bhp at 5,700 rpm and double-wishbone front suspension with swing axles at the rear. Due to its power and fully independent coil-spring suspension, the 190 SL was an excellent performer for the period, yet still provided the comfortable ride expected by the Mercedes-Benz enthusiast.

The 190 SL offers a roomy interior, a surprising amount of luggage space, and a fuel economy of better than 26 miles per gallon, making it both practical and comfortable. With 25,881 units built between 1955 and 1963, the 190 SL was a clear commercial success for Mercedes-Benz.

The example offered here was sold new in Southern California and has remained in that part of the country until recently. Highly optioned from new, it carries the following features from the factory: front bucket seats, leather luggage strap trunk, leather upholstery, U.S. bumper with guards, ATE power brakes with booster, English instrumentation, rear view mirror, Blaupunkt radio amplifier and antenna, externally lockable passenger side door, locking glove box door, heater with blower, soft convertible top, and sealed-beam headlights. Furthermore, dealer-installed options include whitewall tires, seatbelts, and a glove box-mounted mechanical clock. Clearly, this comfortable yet capable 190 SL is something special indeed.

During a recent cosmetic restoration performed, the car was disassembled and given a fresh repaint in DB40G Black on its factory-original body panels. The car also received a full restoration of both the brightwork and the red leather interior. The car is offered in excellent condition, has been fully serviced, and is ready to be enjoyed in the fashion as befitting such a fine automobile. Included with the sale are the original tools and owner’s manual.
