Of all first-generation Corvettes, the 1961–1962 “ducktail” models have a particularly strong following. It has become increasingly common to upgrade them with more modern powertrains and custom features, creating very stylish cars to drive in today’s traffic. This car is an excellent example of the genre.

Created by Billy Dawson’s Corvette Correction, of Seguin, Texas, this car comprises a solid, never-damaged 1961 Corvette body married to one of Dawson’s powder-coated custom chassis, number four of ten signature series units built in 2009. Powered by a 2008 Corvette, 430-brake horsepower, 6.2-liter LS3 crate engine, it drives through a six-speed manual Tremec transmission to a Dana 44, 3.45:1 differential. Suspension is a C4 Corvette in the front and rear.

Aesthetically, the car is only subtly updated, as the Corvette Correction frame allows a standard body to bolt on, unaltered. It sports a 1960-type toothed grille, 18-inch five-bolt custom chrome wheels, and a custom exhaust with a center-mounted four-pipe rear outlet. The body has C5 door handles with electric locks, an Al Knoch custom leather interior with heated seats, power windows, and an electric trunk release. Classic instrument gauges, including an electric-drive speedometer, are housed in the original binnacle. A chrome steering column from Ididit and a Signature Series Wonderbar AM/FM radio complete the cockpit. The maroon convertible top, from Coffman Tops, matches the interior carpets. Vintage heating and air conditioning has been very tastefully added, along with a Be Cool radiator.

The color is 2008 Cadillac Pewter, and the chrome, by Prestige Plating, is excellent. All detailing of the car is exquisite, inside and out. A most intriguing blend of old and new, it is a superb Corvette for every excursion, be it short or long.
