- One of the three famous Courtney cars

- Known history

- An unrepeatable opportunity

Hot rod pioneer Duke Hallock raced a Model A Ford as early as 1930 at El Mirage. Duke, a Fullerton High student, loved the looks of the early Auburn V-windshields, so he made a mould and cast replicas in his high school shop.

In the mid-1940s, a second generation Fullerton High rodder named Dick Courtney built a Hi-Boy on a ’32 frame with – you guessed it – a Hallock windshield. Later Courtney built a second black Hi-Boy with a small-block Chevy under the hood – also of course, sporting this attractive “Vee’d” windshield. Eventually this car was sold to a friend, but by the early 1980s the bug bit again, so Dick Courtney made this third and final version which he drove until he passed on in 1992. Looking a lot like the second version, it included yet another Hallock windshield, now cast from his own mould.

Dennis Webb carried out the chassis and body work, utilizing a “gennie” Deuce chassis and an all-steel Henry body. Tom Leonardo sprayed it deep black and Corona, California’s Dave Gade stitched the interior in red, just like the first two cars. Dave Scanlin, a well-known California Ford collector, bought this car from Courtney’s estate in 1993 and enjoyed it for seven years until he passed it to Florida Hot Rod impresario Kirk White, who in turn sold it to the present owner.

Not channelled but nevertheless low and sleek, the smooth hood panels, floating headlamps, Hallock windshield and general stance of this Hi-Boy combine to produce one of the best looking hot rods ever.

The present whereabouts of the #1 Courtney is unknown, and #2 is with a major Ford collector, making this an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire the third and last Dick Courtney Roadster.

Please note that this vehicle is titled as a 1932.
