The Mercedes-Benz 300SL roadster was introduced in early 1957 and as a direct descendent of the Gullwing, had styling cues that had changed only slightly. Larger fenders, a smaller grille and a chrome strip down the side of the car distinguished it from its brother. The heritage, however, was unquestionable.

Mercedes-Benz engineers had to redesign the chassis in order to maintain the car’s structural rigidity. This was something that was not a consideration for the closed car. As a consequence of the modifications, the roadster was a slightly heavier automobile.

Only a year earlier, Mercedes-Benz made four-wheel disc brakes standard on all models, further improving the car’s driving ability and nimble road manners. From 1962, until the model’s last year of production, the roadsters were considered to be the finest of the open top series by marque experts and driving enthusiasts alike.

The 300SL roadster presented here is a wonderful example of these open grand touring cars that has remained within the collection of its gentleman owner for just over 30 years. It has been lovingly cared for since its initial purchase in the early 1960s, all the while maintained by marque specialists and stored in a climate controlled environment. After nearly 25 years in its owner’s collection it was decided that a thorough restoration was in order. In 1998, the owner contacted and retained the well-respected firm of Hyannis Restorations in Hyannis, Massachusetts to undertake the task.

By early 1999, the restoration was well underway with the roadster being disassembled and stripped to bare metal and then sprayed in the handsome white paintwork it shows today. All rubber and seals were replaced and today the panel fit shows very nicely with both doors, the trunk and hood displaying excellent fitment throughout. The undercarriage was completely restored, repainted and undercoated while the convertible top was replaced with a correct tan example and fitted to the freshly estored bows and hardware. The interior was also completely restored and fit with new Mercedes red leather and the appropriate matching carpets. The gauges all appear to be highly original and correct with the odometer showing just under 60,000 miles, which is thought to be from new.

The brightwork was also fully restored and receipts show that in excess of $11,000 was spent to insure the chrome’s overall excellent presentation and condition. Additional receipts indicate that in total nearly $85,000 was spent during the course of the restoration, the results of which are clearly visible in the quality displayed by the roadster offered here.

This lovely 300SL roadster represents one of most unusual examples of its kind as there are few cars today that remain in the care of their original or early owners. This fully restored example, now over 30 years in its current owner’s possession, is truly a unique example. Fully restored and ready to enjoy, we encourage and invite those interested in becoming this 300SL roadster’s third owner to inspect this beautiful and classic 1960 Mercedes-Benz or contact one of our specialists with any additional questions.
