1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

  • Chassis no. 536244493

Sold for $132,000

210bhp 331 cu. in. overhead valve V8 engine, Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, independent coil spring front suspension, live rear axle and four-wheel power assisted drum brakes. Wheelbase: 115"

The early fifties were a time of wonder and excitement in America. The war was won, the GIs had returned home and were starting families and building businesses. Seemingly insatiable demand for all products, especially automobiles, created one of the country’s greatest periods of economic expansion.

The race to production after the war left no time for new designs – all efforts were focused on returning prewar designs to production. By 1949, however, new models abounded, supply had caught up to demand and competition returned to the market.

History would record that these factors would combine to stimulate the most exciting era of automotive excess. At the heart of it all was GM’s traveling Motorama, a no-holds-barred display of dazzling technology and stunning styling.

The most exciting news for 1953 was the birth of a legend – the new Eldorado. Based on a 1952 show car, the new convertible featured a unique wraparound windshield, a custom interior, and a daring dip in the beltline. Priced at $7,750, it was the most expensive car GM had ever offered. At nearly double the price of the coupe exclusivity was assured, and only 532 were built.

The new Eldorado was powered by Cadillac’s still-new overhead valve engine. Introduced in 1949, it was light and powerful, and quickly became a favorite in competition. In 1953 output was increased dramatically, from 160bhp to 210bhp, an increase of more than 25 percent. Like the other 1953 Cadillacs, electrical systems were upgraded to 12 volts as a result of the demand from power windows, power tops and other power accessories.

The example offered here is a very correct 1953 Eldorado Convertible that, although displaying an older restoration, remains is in very good overall condition. The Eldorado shows very well with the underbody, engine and bay all fully detailed. The Cadillac is understood to be an excellent running and driving car and is complete with every amenity offered at the time. Far and away, one of the most collectable postwar Cadillacs ever produced, this example lacks nothing in its presentation and will make for an excellent weekend driver.

In the eyes of many of today’s collectors, there is little doubt that the 1953 Eldorado is the most desirable postwar Cadillac ever built. With just 532 produced, it is also among the rarest, and it is this combination of rarity and desirability that has driven the demand for these outstanding automobiles.
