1960 Nash Metropolitan Convertible
Sold for $16,500
Created by Edward Stratemeyer, the Nancy Drew series of detective novels have been entertaining generations of kids since 1930. Much like the Hardy Boys, the fictional teenage sleuth has become an American literary celebrity, portrayed in millions of books, several television series and even more films.
Her most recent cinematic appearance was in the Warner Brothers film, Nancy Drew (2007), in which she was portrayed by Emma Roberts, who costars with Max Thieriot and Tate Donovan. Her car in the movie was a delightful robin’s egg blue Nash Metropolitan Convertible, of which several cars were identically outfitted for filming and even a stunt scene.
This particular example is “Hero Car #1” and was evidently the primary car used in the film as well as the one in attendance for the film’s red carpet premiere at the world-famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California. All of this is related in a letter of authenticity from the President of Premiere Studio Rentals “Movie Mike” Walsh, who provided the car for production and from whom it was purchased in 2007. Premiere Studio Rentals is a leading supplier of automobiles to the motion picture industry.
The Metropolitan was widely considered the first American subcompact car. Based on an early design study by Bill Flajole, the production version featured Pinin Farina styling touches, while Fisher & Ludlow of Birmingham, England built the delightful little bodies and Austin handled final assembly at Longbridge. It was available in both convertible and coupe form and proved tremendously popular upon its introduction in 1954. With production continuing into early 1961, this particular car is one of the later examples in the fourth and final series. Finished in blue with a tan folding top, the car is equipped with a spare tire with soft cover and would make for a lovely summer runabout. And it has Hollywood history to boot!
