1929 Studebaker Commander Seven-Passenger Touring
- Chassis no. 4085549
$80,000 - $100,000
By the late 1920s, Studebaker was firmly established as a successful manufacturer of affordable mid-market cars that offered luxury, performance and handsome styling. In 1929, the Commander line was expanded with a choice of either a six or an eight-cylinder engine, and passengers enjoyed greater interior room, courtesy of a double-dropped frame design.
This 1929 Studebaker Commander Seven-Passenger Touring is the sole example known by Studebaker experts to remain in existence. Further research reveals that the car was built by special order and shipped to Norway, where it remained until the 1960s, before returning to the United States. Today, the odometer indicates 32,000 kilometers that are believed to be correct, although this cannot be verified with certainty. Recently, the car was treated to a complete, no-expense-spared restoration. Soon after completion, the Studebaker enjoyed great success on the show field, and most notably, received a National First Place award at the Studebaker Driver's Club International meet in 2004. In fact, the car has received first place honors in every show it has since entered.
The Studebaker is very elegantly finished in a two-tone blue color scheme that is offset by a black cloth top, a dark blue beltline, tan pin striping, and beautiful matching wheels. In addition, the car is complete with a set of fully restored, original side curtains. Exterior adornments include dual period correct Trippe driving lamps, a winged radiator mascot, dual cowl lights, a driver’s sideview mirror, and a rare folding luggage rack and trunk.
Meanwhile, the interior is equipped for comfortable touring with rich black leather upholstery, black carpeting, and a pair of folding jump seats. The interior also features a Waltham clock that is integral with the rearview mirror, and the handsomely painted dash is crowned with a lovely instrument panel that houses a set of period Stewart-Warner gauges. Underhood, the engine bay displays correct finishes, colors and components throughout, and the detailed undercarriage and suspension are equally impressive in their presentation.
Ready for shows or touring events, this one of a kind Studebaker Commander is sure to be admired at any event its next owner should choose to enter.
