  • Chassis no. 384463-28

Sold for $41,250

40bhp, 186.5 cu. in. L-head inline six-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, semi elliptic leaf springs and semi-floating rear axle, four-wheel mechanical brakes. Wheelbase: 110"

Created to serve as the Jr. Oakland, Pontiac – named after the famous Indian chief – made its official debut at the New York Automobile of 1926, and was followed by a sales meeting at the Commodore hotel. In the spirit of the occasion, the Commodore was renamed the “Wigwam”, and the conference was officially referred to as the “Pow Wow.”

Fittingly, the Pontiac was easily identifiable by its Indian Chief mascot perched atop the grille. An instant hit, Pontiac managed to beat the standing record for a maiden year’s total sales, which had been previously held by Chrysler, and in so doing also eclipsed Oakland’s total sales for 1926.

By 1928, the future was looking bright for Pontiac; after only two years of production there were 145,000 examples on the road, and by the end of the calendar year they would be joined by another 130,000. Many changes were implemented for the 1928 model year, both mechanically and visually improving the popular brand. Replacing the Chief mascot was a Brave who resided on a taller, narrower yet deeper radiator. The headlights were made larger and the front fenders had a deep crown and beaded edges. This bold front-end treatment perfectly complemented the car’s sweeping lines and well-proportioned styling. The frame was all new, as was the front axle, and a new steering gear made the car easier to drive. Engine modifications were extensive, as a new Carter updraft carburetor was mated to a larger intake manifold, a higher compression cylinder head was installed and a new Oakland muffler was installed.

The 1928 Pontiac Roadster pictured here in a very attractive shade of blue with cream-colored accents and a tan top was treated to a complete restoration by its previous owner before entering the McMullen Collection in 2001. Like all the other cars in the collection, the Pontiac has been very well preserved, however close examination of this example reveals signs of ageing, with minor imperfections beginning to emerge in the paint, chrome engine compartment and undercarriage. The tan leather interior and rumble seat are quite nice, as is the large wooden steering wheel. While not a show quality vehicle, this Roadster would be ideally suited to local gatherings and/or touring events, or simply just to be enjoyed as a driver quality classic.
