In 1920, Dodge Brothers took second place in the industry in U.S. sales of automobiles. That same year, both brothers would pass away. John of pneumonia in January and Horace of cirrhosis in December. The brothers were incredibly close and the company fell to their widows. Frederick Haynes, a long-time company man ascended to the presidency. Under his tenure, the company dropped to third place in 1921 and by 1925, the company would be fifth in industry sales. The widows decided to sell to New York banking and investment firm Dillon, Reed & Company for a then-record $146 million cash transaction.

E. G. Wilmer was installed as president having no prior automotive experience. The company would continue its sales decline dropping to 13th place by 1928. Enter Walter P. Chrysler who, though relatively new to the industry, was building an immensely popular mid-price car of his own name. Chrysler needed the Dodge Brothers formidable facilities, distribution and dealership network to crack the lower-priced field. Chrysler tried to purchase the company two years earlier and was finally successful in doing so in 1928 – for $170 million, this time in stock, not cash. Within a year, the company moved from unlucky 13th to 7th place in industry sales under Chrysler’s ownership. The transition from Dodge Brothers to the Dodge name would take place around 1930.

This car was the subject of a three-year restoration by John and Pamela Johnson of Avon, Ohio. The restoration began in 1979 with additional work done by Sterling Coachworks of Pickering, Ohio, who painted the car in Marquis Blue and black. Between 1982 and 1984 the car received multiple awards in AACA judging before it was donated to the Crawford Museum in 1991 after being driven just 336 miles since restoration. Despite being an older restoration, the car has held up nicely. In particular, the inside door panels and seats were professionally done and appear as new. The engine bay and undercarriage are nicely detailed and the paint exhibits a deep shine. The chrome is generally of the same caliber but does show smaller signs of age. Features of note include artillery wheels, Trippe lights and a rear-mounted spare.
