Lot 202

1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GT

Sold for €82.500

195 bhp, 2,419 cc four overhead cam V-6 engine with triple Weber 40DCNF/7 carburettors, five-speed manual transaxle, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 2,340 mm (92.1 in.)

The use of the Dino moniker on the 206 GT represented the Italian automaker’s first venture into mid-engine technology for production cars, and the platform for the introduction of the production V-6 engine, a concept championed by Enzo Ferrari’s late son, Alfredo. The car was introduced in 1967 and production was limited with sales generally centred in Italy. In 1969, the Scaglietti-built Dino received a larger and more reliable 2,419 cc engine but the car’s striking design remained virtually unchanged.

This UK specification Dino was delivered new via Brandon Motors. A late production example, it remains in impressive original condition with only four documented owners and about 40,500 miles from new, 2,000 of which were accumulated since 1987. The brilliant Rosso Chiaro livery is from the factory as is the black vinyl upholstery. Prior to the present owner acquiring the car in 2008, it had been meticulously maintained and its fastidious previous owner refurbished the suspension, brakes and cooling system. The car was also fitted with a set of new Cromodora wheels and new correct Michelin tyres.

After purchasing the car, the current owner conducted extensive additional work, including a new clutch, gaskets, spare wheel, new correct steering wheel, seat belts, front and rear stainless steel bumpers and a new original-style stereo, which discreetly conceals iPod™ and Bluetooth connections while retaining a period appearance. The transmission linkages and window openers were refurbished, instrumentation was fixed, the electrics and suspension system were overhauled and valve clearances and timing were addressed. Photo documentation of the work will be supplied with the car along with the steering wheel and original bumpers and seat belts that were replaced. Registered in the UK, the car has an MOT certificate until June 2009.

Sparingly enjoyed by the current careful owner, chassis 07186 is presented with factory genuine fit and finish. The presence and driveability of this Dino is nearly impossible to duplicate via ground-up restoration and it would be a fine addition to any collection of original Ferraris.

ITALIANTEXT

195 CV, 2.419 cm3, motore V-6 con quattro alberi a camme in testa, tre carburatori Weber 40DCNF/7, cambio a 5 marce, sospensioni a ruote indipendenti e freni a disco. Passo: 2.340 mm
