2006 Dodge Durango/1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
- Chassis no. 1JCNJ15U5JT020215
Sold for $35,000
To be auctioned on
Featured at the 2006 SEMA Show, the 2006 Pocono NASCAR race and in the May and June 2006 issues of Popular Mechanics magazine, this “Dare to be Different” SUV combines the rust-free body of a 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with the shortened and strengthened chassis of a 2004 Hemi-powered Dodge Durango.
It’s not as crazy as it sounds. The Grand Wagoneer was the original mid-size SUV, a timeless design that launched what is now the largest segment of the new car industry. It’s a classic concept that remains contemporary today. Indeed, the Grand Wagoneer inspired Jeep’s similarly-styled new 2007 Commander.
The Durango chassis is totally state-of-the-art, with a full frame, independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering, multi-link rear suspension, all-wheel drive and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. Not to mention a 330hp, 5.7 liter Hemi V8 that provides breathtaking performance.
Built as a cost-no-object project car for Popular Mechanics, the “Durangoneer” features a custom paint job by John Van Alphen of Van Alphen and Sons, a custom interior by Ed Geyer of the Recovery Room and final assembly by Rich Taylor’s well-known Minisport firm in Sharon, Connecticut.
Virtually every part is new, from the Michelin Cross Terrain tires to the subtle Hemi Magnum emblem in the grille. Even the bottom of the chassis is finished to show car standards. Every step of the build process is documented in the Popular Mechanics articles, and the Durangoneer has covered less than 10 miles since completion.
Surely, the Durangoneer is the best Grand Wagoneer in the world, and given the extravagant cost of this project, probably the best Grand Wagoneer that will ever be built.
Best of all, proceeds over $35,000 from the sale of the Durangoneer go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Every day drivability, traffic-stopping looks, flawless quality and a tax-deductible charitable contribution. Crazy, maybe, but crazy like a fox.
