Toyota launched the third generation of its now famous Land Cruiser in 1960. Rugged, reliable, and easily repaired, it was available in several configurations, including a two-door soft-top, two-door hardtop, four-door station wagon, and two-door pickup truck. A bulletproof inline-six-cylinder gasoline engine powered US-spec models, while other markets had the option of a four-cylinder diesel as well.

Cosmetically, the FJ would remain essentially the same until it went out of production after the 1984 model year. Functional improvements and upgrades over time shifted the eminently capable Land Cruiser from a bare-bones rock-hopper capable of tackling rough terrain to a more accommodating vehicle with creature comforts like power steering and air conditioning for increased comfort on pavement.

Originally sold new to a resident of Vancouver, British Columbia, this 1980 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser sat as a time capsule with 2,000 miles on the odometer for nearly 30 years before being acquired by the Dare to Dream Collection in 2014. Soon after purchase, this Toyota became the subject of a total restoration. Invoices and photographs on file detail the process of completely disassembling the truck. Now finished in an attractive shade of Deep Ocean Blue, the Land Cruiser additionally features upgraded suspension, air conditioning, a custom stereo system, upgraded power steering, and a winch. The combination of these elements greatly improves the drivability and comfort of this highly capable off-roader. Under the hood, Toyota’s dependable code 2F 4.2-liter overhead valve inline-six engine feeds power into a four-speed manual transmission. A warranty booklet bearing the name of the original owner and an owner’s manual will accompany the truck upon purchase.

Eminently capable off-road and on, this FJ40 has been tastefully upgraded for improved driving dynamics and comfort while deftly preserving its period charm and enduring appeal. All makes for a classic ride that can truly be appreciated by vintage collectors and offroad enthusiasts alike.
