- Super De Luxe model

Sir Alec Issigonis’ 1959 Mini rewrote the book on small cars. Barely 10 feet long, with a 34-hp, 848-cc, transverse four-cylinder engine, 10-inch wheels and front-wheel drive, it could carry four adults at 75 mph and nearly 40 mpg. The car was a huge hit, and by the time production ended in 2000, 5,387,862 had been sold. The last cars were recognizably related to the first ones, despite variations like the Mini-Cooper sports cars, Mini Moke Jeep, Clubman with its square nose, woody wagons, panel vans and pickups.

Minis were sold in the U.S. from 1960-1967 but never in very large numbers – perhaps 50,000 in all. Minis were sold in Canada until 2000 and a number have found their way south.

The car on offer from the Bill Jacobs Collection reportedly belonged to the President of the Michigan Mini Owners Club. It’s a 998-cc, 1970 Super De Luxe with windup windows and a full-width wooden dashboard. It also has the Mini-Cooper short gear shifter.

Significantly, this car carries an English license plate that dates it exactly, and the fact that it evidently belonged to a Mini expert suggests it was changed to left-hand drive – not a difficult job. It sports twin Cibie fog-lights, Mini-Lite mags and fender flares and was repainted in original green with a white top some time ago. It’s quite presentable, with a clean interior and excellent wood veneer and is said to run well. Genuine older Minis are much simpler to maintain than later models with fuel injection and a catalytic converter.
