- Just over 19,000 miles and three owners from new

- One repaint, restored interior, well equipped

- Equipped with IRS, performs exactly as it should

Produced between 1961 and 1964, the Triumph TR4 combined a new, modern and aggressive body design by famed Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti with the basic chassis of the prior TR3A. The TR4 also improved passenger comfort with wind-up windows, face-level ventilation, and an optional hardtop. The 2,138 cc engine of the late-production TR3A continued, while the 1,991 cc engine was also made available to buyers who participated in two-liter racing classes.

The TR4A debuted for 1965 and introduced an all-new independent rear suspension system (IRS), which provided exceptional rear-wheel camber control with excellent wheel travel, while softer springs improved ride quality. Some 28,465 TR4A roadsters were produced between 1965 and August 1967, and of those, 75 percent were equipped with the new IRS, including the car offered here. At the Sebring 12 Hours in 1966, ample proof of the validity of the IRS was provided when three IRS-equipped TR4As achieved a remarkable 1-2-3 class victory.

Rinke Triumph of Mount Clemens, Michigan sold this IRS-equipped TR4A new to a woman who sold it back to them in 1968. The Rinke family retained the car until three years ago, when the current owner, who was a Triumph mechanic during his early career, acquired it. At some point, the exterior of the TR4A was refinished in its original black, and today, the paintwork remains excellent.

Since acquisition, the current owner has detailed the engine bay, added a set of period style Minilite “knock-off” wheels, and restored the cockpit with new seat covers, door panels and carpeting. Along with a beautiful wooden dash panel and a “banjo” steering wheel, the TR4A is complemented by good brightwork and glass and equipped with such desirable accessories as a chrome-plated rear luggage rack and an original AM/FM radio. Handsomely presented, this late-production TR4A performs exactly as it should.
