- Desirable Series I features

- Immaculate condition

Jaguar’s E-Type debuted to universal applause at the March 1961 Geneva Motor Show. But despite its enormous popularity, the car had a number of shortcomings. The transmission, while sturdy, had unsynchronized gears, and the seat backs were non-adjustable, fine for short trips but tiring on a long journey. The cooling system, too, was marginal in some of the warmer American climes. For 1965, these drawbacks were addressed: the gearbox given full synchros and the seat backs made adjustable. Brushed aluminum trim in the cockpit gave way to molded plastic and leather, and a new brake booster was adopted. The engine was enlarged to 4.2 liters, resulting in greater torque, which made for better tractability in traffic situations.

Not long afterwards, the onslaught of safety and emission regulations began having their way with the E-Type, altering both its appearance and its performance. For this reason, it is the Series I cars, built from 1961 to 1967, that are most highly prized, with the later 4.2L cars with all synchro gearboxes most of all.

One of the very late Series I cars, this Roadster has the characteristic covered headlamps and winged knock-off hubs of the early E-Types. Acquired by the vendor in August 2007, it shows fewer than 4,000 miles. Striking in deep red with a fawn leather interior and matching canvas top, it is immaculate in every way. It was restored in the early 1990s, with much of the work done by Brian Anderson’s Classic European Restorations. The car runs and drives well and comes with service receipts from the last several years. The most coveted of E-Type variants, with Series I appearance and the more comfortable cockpit, this car will delight the most discriminating enthusiast.
