1966 Mini Moke

  • Chassis no. ABIL807916

Sold for $23,100

37 hp, 848 cc OHV four-cylinder, single SU carburetor, four-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension with wishbones and rubber cone springs, independent rear suspension with rubber cone springs and pitch spring, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 80"

- From the Bill Jacobs Collection

- One of very few Mini Mokes in the U.S.

- Indicated mileage of only 6,412 kms (4,007 miles)

Casting around for a way to broaden the marketing appeal of the Mini, British Motor Corporation pitched the idea of a Mini-based Jeep to the army. Not surprisingly perhaps, the army was confused as to what one would actually do with a Jeep with about two inches of ground clearance, 10-inch wheels and only front-wheel drive.

Nevertheless the cars were built – for the public instead – and they’re delightfully simple to own and operate. Mokes have their cachet, being popular in sunny locales and for jaunts around relatively quiet neighborhoods. They’re similar in concept to Fiat Jollys, with much better parts availability and a more attractive price.

Available only from 1964-68 in the UK, the Moke displayed remarkable staying power. It was built in Australia from 1966-81 and Portugal from 1980-94. The Moke was immortalized in Patrick McGoohan’s 1960s cult television sci-fi thriller The Prisoner, usually equipped with a striped Surrey top.

This car was bought by Mr. Jacobs from a friend and used around town on sunny days, perhaps for even the odd ice cream trip or two. Repainted in grey with yellow/blue green upholstery (they were all green originally) and with a white top, it appears to be very sound. The indicated mileage is quite low, and the Moke presents very nicely. Although it has been driven and enjoyed, there are no major cosmetic shortcomings to speak of. It has been garaged and maintained in the Jacobs Collection and would be ideal for beach or even larger estate duty.
