- From the Bill Jacobs Collection

- California black plate car with wire wheels and 29,000 original miles

- Fully restored in British Racing Green

When the MGB arrived in 1962, it was viewed as heresy by the flat-cap-and-handlebar-mustache Nigel Shiftright, T-series fans. They were used to side-curtains, ineffective heaters, non-existent defrosters and multiple water leaks. The new roadster was shorter and squarer than the preceding MGA, with windup windows, outside door handles and more weather equipment. It was also monocoque construction, moving away from the separate frame of the MGA. The 1,798-cc OHV four-cylinder engine was a bored-out version of the B-Series motor but boasted a lot more torque.

Chrome bumper cars from 1962-74 are preferred, and the most desirable years are considered to be 1965-67, with the early dash, the free-revving pre-emission engine and optional knock-off wire wheels and overdrive. 1965 saw the first five-main bearing engine, which eliminated the crankshaft whip of the three-main bearing cars and offered a better oil cooler.

Most MGBs were driven to destruction, quite often in excess of 150,000 miles, so a low-mileage example is very rare. When a 29,000-mile, wire-wheel car is fully restored in British Racing Green with black leather and its original California black plate – well, the line forms to the right. This car is precisely such an example, offered from the noted collection of Bill Jacobs.

The MGB introduced a generation to (relatively) trouble-free British sports car motoring. Spares are easily available, the cars still perform to modern traffic standards, with rack-and-pinion steering, and front disc brakes are comfortable and just plain enjoyable. Couple all this with a convertible that’s covered the mileage of a two-year-old car and has been restored in the best color, and surely, there can be no downside.
