Lot 120

1964 Jaguar Mark X Sedan

Sold for $22,000

265 bhp, 3,781 cc dual overhead camshaft inline six-cylinder engine, three SU carburetors, automatic transmission, independent front suspension with wishbones and coil springs, independent rear suspension with transverse leaf spring, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 120"

- Offered from a prominent private collection
- Powerful XK DOHC “six,” automatic gearbox
- Fully-independent suspension, startling performance
- Comprehensively restored and little used since last sold

With new unibody construction and based upon the same 120-inch wheelbase length as its predecessor, the new Jaguar Mark X full-size sedan debuted in mid-1962. Its fresh, modern styling included straight-through fender lines, a revised roofline, a lowered hood and a lowered vertical-bar grille, plus Jaguar’s first use of quad headlamps.

A 265-bhp 3.8-liter XK six-cylinder engine, the same used by the E-Type, provided abundant power. Wishbones and coil springs replaced the torsion-bar front suspension of the Mark IX, and an independent rear suspension endowed the Mark X with handling that belied its size. By 1964, a Borg-Warner automatic gearbox and power-operated steering, clearly targeted at the all-important US market, became standard equipment and further refined Jaguar’s top-level sedan. In September 1964, the Mark X engine grew to 4.2 liters of displacement.

This 1964 Mark X Sedan was acquired in early 2005 by the prominent collection from which it is now offered. At that time, it showed just less than 54,000 miles, and it has traveled few, if any, miles ever since. At the time of its last sale in 2005, the Mark X was a well-maintained original car prior to being completely restored. Work included a bare-metal repaint, with the new black finish color-sanded and buffed. New and restored parts included a new wiring harness, new rubbers, seals, lenses, interior lamps, trim and accessories, as well as new Wilton wool carpeting, a wool headliner and a deluxe interior including new foam seat cushions. In addition, the brightwork and woodwork were restored.

At the time of its sale in 2005, the vendor reported that the Jaguar was a very strong-running car in top shape, with all mechanical items working as expected. Along with its restoration, startling performance and room for up to five, this Mark X includes such desirable items as air conditioning, power windows and red line tires. Complete with receipts documenting the restoration, this rare, technically sophisticated and nicely presented Jaguar is a lovely and eminently enjoyable touring car.
