- California car, bought new in Beverly Hills

- Only 7,400 original miles, complete set of tools

The E-Type Jaguar burst on an unsuspecting world at the 1961 Geneva Auto Show – the first coupe having been driven there directly from London. After the stodgy, portly XK150, it was a revolution, the obvious successor to the Le Mans-winning D-Type of six years before.

At only $2,464 for the roadster and $2,520 for the sleek coupe, it was also a screaming deal and, considering the elegance and performance, it remains so to this day. The E-Type was the first road-going Jaguar not designed by Sir William Lyons. Aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer got to reinterpret his D-type ideas, with an all-new monocoque construction, tilt nose and fully independent suspension.

The first generation E-Type, with its covered headlights and dainty taillights, is the definitive example of the model, and this car, with its California origins, low mileage and long-term ownership, would seem to be a prime example. In ermine white, with red leather interior and black top, it also sports the optional chrome wire wheels.

Sold new in Beverly Hills, this E-Type shows only 7,400 original miles – extraordinarily low mileage and in the best rust-free climate in the world, at that. The first owner kept the car until 1982, though he obviously drove it very little. The E-Type then passed to William Russo, also in Los Angeles, who owned it until 1988 when it was bought by well-known collector Jack Ruscilli. He had the car until 1995, before it entered a private New Jersey collection and was finally acquired by Bill Jacobs in 2006. It comes to market from his extraordinary collection, still with its complete set of tools.
