1955 Jaguar XK140 MC Drophead Coupe

Sold for $101,750

210 bhp, 3,442 cc inline six-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts, dual SU carburetors, C-Type cylinder head, four-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension with double wishbones, coil springs and anti-roll bar, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 102"

- An original, matching numbers “MC” variant
- Show-quality, body-off restoration
- Fewer than 1,000 miles since photo-documented restoration

John Bolster, technical editor of Britain’s Autosport, said the XK140 was “a great improvement in every important respect” over the XK120. He added, “140s took two gear changes and 10 seconds to reach 60 mph,” but its real appeal was an ability to get to 100 mph quickly and cruise there “with only a whiff of throttle.” In June 1955, Road & Track tested a $3,745 MC roadster and reached 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds. That, it said, was “performance per dollar excelled by no other car.”

Recently, a June 2008 Octane feature on the Jaguar XKs of the 1950s highlighted the real-world ownership experience today. In particular, Robert Croucher noted their ability to capably handle today’s traffic conditions, as well as the remarkable availability of replacement parts and service, given the long production life of the powerful and robust XK ‘six,’ which continued from its 1948 introduction through the early 1980s.

This original left-hand drive 1955 XK140, chassis S818202, is an extremely desirable top-level, high-performance “MC” variant, which combined the crankshaft damper, wire-spoke wheels, dual exhaust outlets, twin fog lamps, and windscreen washers of the “M” option package with the competition-bred, high-flow cylinder head of the Le Mans-conquering C-Type. When new, the “MC” package represented an incredible value, adding just $295 to the base price of the XK140.

Fewer than 1,000 miles have been traveled since S818202 received a complete body-off restoration to show-quality standards, and it remains exquisite in presentation and performs exactly as it should. The original owner’s handbook and tool kit, as well as a book containing photographic documentation of the restoration, accompany the car. These XK140s are excellent event cars, and they are particularly wonderful for spirited, open-air touring, especially with the added performance afforded by the “MC” package. Alternately, the side windows and fully-lined top are a marked improvement over the roadster variant, rendering these drophead coupes much more capable all-weather cars. With its stunning restoration, this matching numbers, factory-built XK140 MC is simply superb throughout and offers its next owner the opportunity to enter a multitude of shows and classic touring events.
