Original and beautifully restored XK120s are so prized these days that sometimes the competition history of the model itself – its raison d’etre in the first place, if you will – is obscured. Everybody knows about the 132.596 mph high-speed runs at Jabbeke in Belgium in 1948 and Ian Appleyard’s rally success with factory roadster NUB 120 in the early 1950s, but did you know there was an all-XK120 race in England in 1951, for example? Or that XK120s competed in the U.S. well into the 1960s?

Hap Richardson was the C-production champion on the West Coast in 1960 with 200 races and some 50 class wins. He even took a third place at Willow Springs in 1961 behind Dave MacDonald and Bob Bondurant’s Corvettes. In fact, modified XK120s remained a force in motor racing as late as 1969 when John Pearson produced a 1954 Drophead Coupe that proved to be faster than any racing E-Type in England.

This core enthusiasm for racing XK120s is well illustrated by the dark blue 1954 XK120 roadster on offer, which indicates only 341 miles and has been the subject of a frame-off restoration. The engine has been uprated with a C-type head with big valves, high lift cams and two-inch carburetors. The net result is roughly 210 hp and a top speed in excess of 120 mph.

The windshield has been replaced with a Brooklands screen and a teardrop headrest, the interior has been refinished in oxblood leather interior, and the chrome plating is excellent, including wire wheels and Lucas spotlights. The effect is eye-catching – as intended – and with performance to match.
