- Half-century in single ownership

- One of only 83 built

- Corvette power, tremendous performance!

Sydney Allard was a stouthearted racing driver and car constructor. In the 1930s, he built a dozen Ford-based specials for British trails competitions, some with Lincoln engines and many with a split-axle independent front suspension developed by Leslie Ballamy. During World War II, his London garage, which went by the name Adlards, Ltd., rebuilt Ford vehicles for British forces.

In 1946, with plenty of engines and parts on hand but no government contracts, he introduced the Allard K1, a two-seater on a box-section frame with transverse leaf springing. Either Ford or Mercury flathead V-8 power was available. Light and powerful, the K1 had excellent acceleration. A longer wheelbase version, called the L1, had seats for four.

In 1947, Allard introduced the J1, a shortened K1 intended for trials and sprints, and a four-seater, the M1. The most memorable Allard is the J2, up-rated from the J1 with a DeDion rear axle on coil springs and radius arms. A works J2 finished third at Le Mans in 1950. Most of the 90 built went to the U.S., with Cadillac or Chrysler engines fitted on arrival. A new chassis characterized the J2X of 1952. Now of stiffened tubular construction, it retained the DeDion axle in the rear but relocated the front radius rods ahead of the split axle.

This Allard J2X has been with its current owner for most of its life. It was completed on March 25, 1952 and, like most J2Xs, was shipped to the United States. Originally fitted with a Chrysler hemi and three-speed Lincoln-Zephyr transmission, it was converted to Corvette power by Chuck Friedrich, who raced it during the early 1960s. The engine is a 1960 Corvette powerplant, with single four-barrel carburetor and three-quarter race camshaft. Gearbox is a Corvette four-speed. After a fairly successful season in C-modified SCCA competition, Friedrich, of Golden, Colorado, sold it in 1961 to the current owner, who flew out and drove it back to the east coast in a brisk October journey.

The new owner had it reconfigured for street use, removing the roll bar and braces that had been fitted for racing. The car was taken down to the bare chassis and the body stripped, reworked and painted in 14 coats of hand-rubbed lacquer by a local craftsman. Better seats were also installed for driver and passenger comfort. This freshening has held up well, as the car has been used for pleasure, including a number of classic car tours. It is very tractable and possessed of the tremendous acceleration for which Allard J2s are famous. The engine conversion improved the handling, since the Corvette powerplant is much lighter than the Chrysler hemi. The car has also been uprated with Buick Alfin brakes in the front. The black paint retains a good shine. The cockpit is purposeful, though the floor has red carpeting to match the seats. The damascened instrument panel is basic but elegant in its simplicity. The engine compartment is clean, though not detailed.

The Allard J2X was a rare commodity when new, and no less so today. With just 83 built, this could be the only one readily available today.
