1936 MG TA Roadster

  • Chassis no. TA0412

Sold for $30,250

52 bhp, 1,292 cc, four-cylinder overhead-valve engine, twin SU carburetors, four-speed manual gearbox, solid front and rear axles with half-elliptic springs, and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 94"

- Recently freshened, both cosmetically and mechanically

- Matching-numbers drivetrain, well-equipped with accessories

In 1936, MG introduced the first of its famous T-Series sports cars beginning with the TA. The prewar TA firmly established the stylish look of the typical British sports car with its tall, square radiator, wire wheels, cut-down doors, folding windscreen and rear-mounted slab fuel tank and spare tire. In fact, this classic design would influence the design of competing marques, as well as carry MG through nearly the next twenty years.

Lower and wider than the previous PB, the two-seat TA proved very popular with its more spacious and comfortable cockpit, good handling characteristics and smoother ride. With its new 1,292-cc engine with modern pushrod-actuated overhead valves, the lightweight TA could easily reach speeds approaching 80 miles per hour, with acceleration to 50 miles per hour accomplished in approximately 15 seconds from a standing start – excellent performance in those days!

This lovely right-hand drive example of the first generation T-Series was meticulously restored and maintained within a private collection for many years until last year, when it was purchased and refreshed by the new owner to its wonderful current condition. Cosmetic work included a new burled walnut dash, steering wheel and gauges, as well as a complete, concours-level detailing. Mechanically, the brakes, drivetrain, carburetors, fuel system and undercarriage were rebuilt. Finished in British Racing Green and complete with the matching-numbers drivetrain, a rear-mounted spare tire, wire wheels, driving lamps, badges and a badge bar, this 1936 MG TA is a great first-series example of the long-lived T-Series MG roadsters.
