Charlesworth, founded in 1907 and located in Coventry, initially supplied bodies to such local manufacturers as Hillman and Singer. By 1936, the firm’s annual production reached 500 bodies, and their biggest client was Alvis. The firm also produced a small number of open tourers based on MG’s SA chassis.

This splendid 1936 MG SA tourer, Chassis SA0432, retains its original Charlesworth body. While Charlesworth offered three distinct body styles during MG SA production, this particular car was fitted with the earliest. It was delivered from MG’s Abingdon works on April 27, 1936 to Charlesworth for bodywork.

Gene Ponder, a noted collector from Marshall, Texas, owned SA0432 until April 2007, when it joined a prominent private collection. At some point, SA0432 was restored, and although its original exterior color is unknown today, it was strikingly refinished in pearl white with a tan beltline that matches the cloth convertible top and top boot. Its factory-original 75 bhp, 2,288 cc overhead-valve “six” was completely rebuilt at the time of restoration and is fully detailed. Likewise, the chassis received the same careful attention during restoration, as did the wire wheels and rear-mounted spare. The interior panels and seats were reupholstered in tan leather and display excellent craftsmanship. This rich-looking interior is underscored by tan wool carpeting, gleaming chrome accents and refinished walnut trim. The wooden dash houses a full set of rebuilt Jaeger gold instruments along with a period University Motors Ltd. plaque.

This handsome 1936 MG SA Charlesworth Tourer displayed minimal wear at the time of its sale in 2007 and has seen little use since. There are a mere five known SA survivors left in the world with this type of Charlesworth coachwork and just seventeen in total. Fully verified by the MG SVW Registry, this fine example is ready for both grand touring and concours events, where it will be fully welcomed.
